Teaching in the Real World Reflective Writing

An analysis of my experiences during the middle school internship, reflecting on the multiple roles of a science teacher and how I intend to prepare for future student-teaching work.

Reflection

Engaging in this reflective practice helped broaden my understanding of the teaching profession beyond the responsibility of instructional design; the teacher manages a broader set of responsibilities that each require unique professional development needs. My views on teaching became more holistic, and I recognized different areas for personal growth in the profession beyond pedagogy and curriculum. At the time, classroom management, authority, and restorative justice were areas I believed were underdeveloped in my practice. To take ownership of my practice and engage in ongoing professional development, I researched future professional development opportunities, particularly the Center for Restorative Justice, in order to address tendencies in my classroom management. Honest reflective practices and self-assessment allow me to examine my practices, leading me to adapt my pedagogy and philosophy, seek helpful resources, and understand the full scope of the teaching profession.
