Teachers of Promise Institute

I was nominated to attended the Teachers of Promise professional development for student teachers in Virginia in Richmond.

Reflection

I attended the Teachers of Promise Institute in March. That experience, alongside the student teaching, helped me think about what my practice should look like in 5 years. One idea I continue to revisit is that of one of the keynote speakers, Principal Baruti Kafele: Are my students at an advantage because I am their teacher? I think this encapsulates the mindset that I wish to strive for, but it can be expanded even further. Are my colleagues, my school, and my community at an advantage because I am their teacher? The strategies I will continue to develop will be motivated by those two ideas. I’ll continue to collaborate with teachers in my district, asking to shadow veteran teachers and keep journals of my experiences. I’ll also reach out to other disciplines within the schools to plan more interdisciplinary instruction that benefits our students. I’ll design an introductory email to reach out to parents, be transparent about my teaching practice, and make them feel included in the educational process. I’ll research community and cultural centers in the area to shadow and interview members, and with this, I can support students and families from diverse cultures and backgrounds. All of these actions will bring me closer to answering yes to those questions above.
