Series and Parallel Graphic Organizers

Slides and activity sheets with different graphic organizers and student-language learning objectives.

Reflection

Throughout the series and parallel inquiry investigation, different graphic organizers—reflection boxes and VIR charts—were integrated directly into the activity sheets to support students in developing deep understandings of cognitively demanding content. These structures for organizing the collection of data reduced the extraneous cognitive load of the assignment; productive struggle was supported in a positive, productive way. Students were able to think more critically about their data rather than focus on how to format it. The activity also featured learning objectives written in student-friendly language, an instructional strategy intentionally used because students were often confused about the content knowledge goals of the previous inquiry activities. Students had a sense of purpose and direction; their work became more efficient and the construction of knowledge became of relevant to the content standards.
