Student Spring Break Discussion Board
A warm-up assignment that students got to do to work through their understanding from before spring break.
Reflection
Remembering content knowledge after the spring break presented a challenge I hadn’t previously considered, especially in the AP physics course. To slowly ease back into school, I structured a freewriting reflection through the Canvas discussion board. Comments were anonymous because students were more willing to write their true responses to the freewriting and to be more open to recalling and recording information on rotational dynamics. The online discussion board made students more thoughtful in articulating their prior knowledge and in using their peers' insights to learn from each other. These responses also allowed me to identify which students required more support after spring break, including lunch tutoring sessions, adjusting homework scaffolds, and revising group structures. This data also helped inform my instructional planning; I needed to review certain concepts before continuing the unit plan, and I could also easily integrate other concepts into future inquiry activities.
