Work Order Tickets Assignment
Students took the role of an electrician, connecting prior knowledge of the course content to authentic problems and writing appropriate responses to the customers having issues with their house and cars.
Reflection
Circuits are present all throughout my students’ lives, but every functional circuit shares the same two requirements for full operation. To provide authentic learning experiences, students assumed the role of an electrician, evaluating approximate work order tickets for two companies and diagnosing circuit problems on each ticket to reinforce their understanding of those requirements. The authentic framing also prompted students to consider how knowledge is communicated differently to different audiences. Many students utilized informal writing for brainstorming and understanding since they were the audience. On the work order tickets, students exhibited formal, professional writing at the comprehension level for customers served by the company. Students were able to concretely experience the difference in communicating content knowledge while reinforcing physics knowledge in practical scenarios.
