AED Engage Activities
Students watched a video of an AED situation and a video on how AEDs work. Students answered questions on how AEDs work using their prior knowledge of circuits.
Reflection
This lesson offered a natural bridge between physics content and authentic experiences discussed in prior health courses. After watching videos on an AED saving a student athlete’s life, students applied their understanding of electric potentials, conductors, and insulators to explain how charge flows through an AED. Knowledge was transferred to answer crucial questions such as why is it unsafe to touch the patient during the shock and what the functions were for each part of the AED circuit. The lesson was then framed around a single question: what is a safe but effective voltage in order to a save a patient’s life? This required students to critically analyze real-world data with Ohm’s Law, consider the health limitations of their model, and authentically communicate knowledge to a corporate audience. This knowledge directly informs how students should operate around AEDs in order to stay safe, linking abstract understanding to real-world consequences.
